Let there be no dispute in the Pierce County city of Lakewood, the city manager, Andrew Neiditz, says the correct name for the December holiday is Christmas.
He told the city council Monday the city would be consistent in referring to the Dec. 5 celebration in front of City Hall as the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Festival. He says Christmas is the appropriate name of the federal holiday.
The Tacoma News Tribune reports residents complained in the past about calling the city event a "holiday" tree lighting.
The city manager says he is not trying to offend or disregard non-Christians, and there are ways to be sensitive, such as using inclusive language as much as possible.
