The University of Washington has 1,100 more students this fall than the number provided for in the state budget.
There are about 500 more continuing sophomores and juniors than expected, and about 500 more seniors. UW enrollment officials believe the increase in student retention is due to the economic downturn.
Higher education enrollments usually go up during recessions.
UW President Mark Emmert is encouraging state officials to provide more money for college enrollment, despite an expected budget shortfall. Emmert says investing in higher education will help the state's economy.
