SEATTLE —

A new book by University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Professor Cliff Mass make clear many weather phenomena in Washington and Oregon.

"The Weather of the Pacific Northwest" explains rain shadows and the convergence zone. It tells why a snowstorm might hit a tiny area and why windstorms rip through the entire region. There's a section on dust storms east of the Cascades and the so-called banana belt of southwest Oregon.

The book was published by the University of Washington Press.
