EPA says mine owners must treat water

The Environmental Protection Agency is ordering a company that owns a defunct uranium mine near Spokane to continue treating contaminated water there.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

The Environmental Protection Agency is ordering a company that owns a defunct uranium mine near Spokane to continue treating contaminated water there.

The order was issued to Newmont USA Limited and its subsidiary Dawn Mining Company, which own the Midnite Mine Superfund Site.

The companies treat water to remove uranium and other metals. The open-pit mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation operated from the mid-1950s until 1981.

The treated water becomes a sludge that is classified as low-level radioactive waste, and the owners must find a licensed facility to accept it because the state no longer allows them to keep it at the mill site.
