Franklin County public defense costs rising

The public defense coordinator for Franklin County has asked county commissioners to approve another $100,000 because of costs related to two trials.

TRI-CITIES, Wash. —

The public defense coordinator for Franklin County has asked county commissioners to approve another $100,000 because of costs related to two trials.

The Tri-City Herald reports the county had budgeted $45,000 for professional services for indigent defendants. It has already spent $75,000 this year to help prepare for the trials of David Webster and Vicent Ruiz.

Webster is charged with raping a cellmate in the Franklin County Jail. Ruiz is accused of gunning down five men in 1987 at a Pasco auto shop.

The county helps the defense by paying for investigators, travel to contact witnesses and DNA testing.
