Army captain gets 1 year for firearms conspiracy

A Fort Lewis Army captain was sentenced today to a year and a day in prison for firearms smuggling conspiracy.

A Fort Lewis Army captain was sentenced today to a year and a day in prison for firearms smuggling conspiracy.

U.S. District Judge Marsha J. Pechman rejected a recommendation from both sides that Capt. Tomoaki Iishiba be spared time behind bars. She says the 34-year-old former Army intelligence liaison to the Japanese military showed poor judgment.

After serving his sentence, Iishiba faces three years on supervised release.

He pleaded guilty in July to arranging to send firearms parts to Japan without a license repeatedly since 2006. The components included 60 EoTech 553 holographic night vision sights.

Government and defense lawyers recommended a sentence of three years on probation.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Emily Langlie, says the case probably means the end of Iishiba's military career.
