Man fatally burned on UW campus was former staffer

University of Washington police say a 61-year-old man who died after lighting himself on fire in a crowded campus plaza was a former support staff member.

SEATTLE —

University of Washington police say a 61-year-old man who died after lighting himself on fire in a crowded campus plaza was a former support staff member.

The man died Thursday afternoon, shortly after he was brought to Harborview Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns.

UW Assistant Police Chief Ralph Robinson says his department is investigating why the man poured gasoline over himself, then set himself ablaze in Red Square, a large brick plaza at the center of the Seattle campus. Robinson says he doesn't know what department the man worked in, nor when or why he left.

Several bystanders tried to smother the flames with their jackets and other clothing.

The King County medical examiner's office has not yet identified the man.
