Patrol investigating college diplomas

The State Patrol wants to know if nine of its troopers used phony college degrees to get higher salaries.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

The State Patrol wants to know if nine of its troopers used phony college degrees to get higher salaries.

Six troopers and three sergeants were placed on paid administrative leave last week pending the outcome of a criminal investigation, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Monday.

State Patrol Capt. Jeff DeVere said the action stems from an audit the agency began this summer after members of a Spokane-based diploma mill were found guilty in a federal court trial. The trial revealed that many of the buyers of the fake diplomas worked for government agencies across the country.
