Officials may call off search on Mount Adams

YAKIMA — If the hunt for a missing climber on Mount Adams is unsuccessful this weekend officials will consider calling off the search.

YAKIMA — If the hunt for a missing climber on Mount Adams is unsuccessful this weekend officials will consider calling off the search.

Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin says the search this week has failed to turn up any sign of the climber. About 40 searchers are on the mountain today.

If the man is not found by Monday, Irwin says officials will decide whether to continue looking.

The 27-year-old Oregon man, Derek Mamoyac of Philomath, was reportedly seen Sunday headed up the mountain on a one-day climb. He was not equipped to camp out overnight. He was reported missing Monday when he failed to show up for work.

Snow covers the upper elevation of 12,277-foot Mount Adams, which is 31 miles east of Mount St. Helens.
