Guilty plea in racial Longview assault

KELSO — An 18-year-old transient accused of attacking an interracial couple has entered a guilty plea after making a deal with prosecutors.

KELSO — An 18-year-old transient accused of attacking an interracial couple has entered a guilty plea after making a deal with prosecutors.

Shawn Michael Mooney admitted he would be found guilty of assault and said he wanted to take advantage of the offer from prosecutors who dropped a malicious harassment hate crime charge.

The Longview Daily News reports that Mooney will face 14 months in prison when the judge signs sentencing papers Oct. 21.

A 14-year-old white boy and 13-year-old black girl told police they were attacked Aug. 21 by a man wearing a baseball cap with a swastika. He hit the boy in the mouth, breaking his jaw, and threw the girl to the ground while making a racist comment.
