Seattle firefighters doused four smoldering shipping containers on the American President Line's Peru Saturday. The Coast Guard said the ship reported high temperatures and smoke coming from its cargo hold on Oct. 5 while traveling from Hong Kong to Seattle. Coast Guard escorted the ship to Port of Seattle, which arrived on Friday.
On Saturday afternoon, Seattle firefighters cut holes in the container and sprayed water inside. The Coast Guard believes the containers held clothing, shoes and appliances. No other heat or smoke was detected on the ship.
