A bomb squad has been called in to disable a pipe bomb that was found inside a pickup that is said to have caused a fatal five-car crash in Kitsap County this morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The crash that closed traffic on Highway 3 occurred just after 7 a.m. when a northbound pickup driven by a 21-year-old man crossed the center line and caused a semi carrying four people to swerve, according to the Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Krista Hedstrom.
The pickup rolled several times and landed by the side of the road while the semi crashed head-on into an SUV, flipped and landed on top of a Mitsubishi Eclipse, police said.
The driver of the SUV, a man in his 40s from Belfair, was killed, according to WSP officials.
The driver of the pickup and the driver of the Eclipse, who was trapped in the vehicle for several hours, were taken to the hospital.
The driver of a fifth vehicle was unable to stop before ramming into the wreckage. That driver was uninjured, police said.
The driver of the pickup, who suffered leg injuries and was taken to Harrison Medical Center, is being questioned by police. Hedstrom said the road will remain closed until the accident investigation is completed and the bomb has been detonated or disabled.
