City considers buying Vancouver newspaper building
Vancouver, Wash., city officials are considering buying the offices of The Columbian newspaper, rather than building a new city hall.
Vancouver, Wash., city officials are considering buying the offices of The Columbian newspaper, rather than building a new city hall.
The newspaper announced this week that because of financial problems, it would move out of its new six-story office building next year and return to its former offices. The paper's new downtown building is across the street from where officials were planning to build a new $40 million city hall.
City economic development director Eric Holmes says the city is far from a decision and much more examination has to be done. But he says the newspaper building is the right size, the right location, and is priced close to what the city expected to pay for new offices.
