Washington shares in federal spending

A stopgap spending bill signed last week by President Bush provides nearly $500 million for military bases in Washington, including $330 million for Fort Lewis.

TACOMA, Wash. —

A stopgap spending bill signed last week by President Bush provides nearly $500 million for military bases in Washington, including $330 million for Fort Lewis.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that dozens of companies and small businesses in the state will receive more than $100 million in Pentagon contracts, and more will profit from earmarks secured by lawmakers.

Congressman Norm Dicks and Sen. Patty Murray, who hold appropriations positions, say they are frustrated that Congress had to resort to the temporary funding measure.

Murray and Dicks secured most of the $100 million in earmarks. For example, Murray got $1.6 million for a Kent firm and Washington State University to improve the freshness of the Army rations known as Meals Ready to Eat.
