Three people were taken to Harborview Medical Center this morning after a fire broke out in a four-story apartment building on First Hill, the Seattle Fire Department said.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 1400 Boren Ave. at about 6:50 a.m. and reported heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-floor window.

Investigators later determined that a couch pushed up against a wall heater caused the fire, resulting in about $250,000 in damage.

Many people evacuated the upper floors through a stairwell, though one person used a ladder to escape, according to the fire department.

Those taken to Harborview had non-life-threatening injuries associated with smoke inhalation, the fire department said.

The King County chapter of the American Red Cross said it will provide support to seven adults displaced in the fire.
