Snake River fall chinook fishery may open Thursday

The first catch-and-keep fall chinook fishery in more than 30 years on the Snake River in Washington is set to open Thursday.

DAYTON, Wash. —

The first catch-and-keep fall chinook fishery in more than 30 years on the Snake River in Washington is set to open Thursday.

A fisheries biologist in Dayton, Glen Mendel, says state Fish and Wildlife Director Jeffrey P. Koenigs plans to sign an emergency rule for the season Wednesday.

The season would begin the next day and run through Oct. 15 or whenever the quota is met, whichever happens first.

The run is estimated at 20,000 to 35,000 fish. Scientists believe that's enough for a recreational catch of about 400.

The opening would be between about a mile above Little Goose Dam and about 10 miles downstream to a railroad bridge below the mouth of the Tucannon River. The limit would be one hatchery chinook and two hatchery jacks a day.
