Seattle police arrest homeless campers
Seattle police are arresting people who refused to leave a homeless camp they call Nickelsville to make a political point.
Seattle police are arresting people who refused to leave a homeless camp they call Nickelsville to make a political point.
The arrests broadcast Friday on KING-TV appeared to be peaceful, with officers escorting people away from the south Seattle property lot where homeless advocates set up more than 100 pink tents.
One eviction deadline had passed Thursday and a city official gave residents another warning Friday afternoon that they would be arrested for trespassing on city property.
City representatives also are on hand, offering shelter beds and other services to the homeless.
Critics of Mayor Greg Nickels say he doesn't do enough to help the homeless.
Nickels supports finding permanent housing for the homeless but says they can't be allowed to camp in the city, for health and safety reasons.
