Seattle evicting homeless campers
A city of Seattle official has ordered residents of a homeless camp to leave or be arrested for trespassing.
A city of Seattle official has ordered residents of a homeless camp to leave or be arrested for trespassing.
Some residents of the camp called Nickelsville told KING-TV they would defy the latest deadline on Friday afternoon. They disputed offers from city representatives who said shelter beds are available for them.
There were about 100 people in the camp that was set up early Monday on city property in south Seattle in an attempt to demonstrate that Mayor Greg Nickels doesn't do enough to help the homeless.
Nickels supports finding permanent housing for the homeless but says they can't be allowed to camp in the city, for health and safety reasons.
