A U.S. Forest Service officer was shot and killed at about 2:40 this afternoon on a remote road near Sequim.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Krista Hedstromsaid the officer had radioed in a call to the patrol's dispatch about a van without license plates on Forest Service Road 2880. The officer had also sought some further information from dispatch operators.
But when dispatch operators returned the call, there was no response. At that point, State Patrol troopers and Clallam County sheriff's deputies rushed to the scene, where they found the officer's body, but the not the van.
Hedstrom said the van is believed to be an older red or gray Dodge with no plates. She said she would provide more details as they become available.
