Abandoned Ore. horses auctioned at low prices

xc

OREGON CITY, Ore. — Eleven horses abandoned in Clackamas County have been auctioned off at bargain basement prices — one for five dollars and none for more $45.

The money will help cover the costs of caring for the animals since they were found on August 31st.

Authorities say they still don't know who abandoned the horses. Some bore green, numbered tags but investigators say they don't know what they mean.

Most of the horses were purchased by Willamette Valley residents, although the Humane Society of the United States bought five. They will go to an animal sanctuary south of Eugene.

Animal protection groups say such abandonments are more common because many owners no longer can afford to care for the animals.
