Bellevue, Wash. teachers vote to end strike

Bellevue teachers have voted to end their nine-day strike, approving a contract agreement that gives them more money and more control over lesson plans.

BELLEVUE, Wash. —

Bellevue teachers have voted to end their nine-day strike, approving a contract agreement that gives them more money and more control over lesson plans.

The vote was taken Sunday night.

Classes for the 2008-09 school year in the 16,000-student district are finally scheduled to get under way Monday morning.

Negotiators for the striking Bellevue teachers and the Bellevue School District reached a tentative contract agreement Friday. Both sides agreed not to discuss terms until teachers were briefed on the proposal.

The strike by 1,200 teachers began Sept. 2. Key issues were pay, health insurance benefits and how much teachers could deviate from scripted lesson plans.
