Fumes overcome 3 at Canadian mushroom farm

Three people have died after being overcome by fumes at a mushroom farm south of Vancouver, British Columbia.

LANGLEY, British Columbia —

Three people have died after being overcome by fumes at a mushroom farm south of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Authorities say three others became seriously ill Friday from exposure to the fumes in a pump house at Farmers Fresh Mushrooms Inc. in Langley, and two are still hospitalized.

It's unclear what kind of fumes were involved. The Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia, known as WorkeSafeBC, is investigating.

Neighbors say they have filed complaints for years about a foul stench of manure on the farm. Roger Layton of the neighborhood group Citizens for Responsible composting says huge piles of manure sit at the farm for weeks.

Owner Ha Quan Truong has been unavailable for comment.
