Recess returning to Tacoma elementaries
Tacoma elementary students can look forward to recess when school resumes next week.
Tacoma elementary students can look forward to recess when school resumes next week.
Superintendent Art Jarvis is recommending play time during the school day, and the school board is expected to make it policy at the Sept. 11 meeting.
Recess had been optional at 37 schools. Many schools said they had to take away recess to work on meeting academic standards.
The new policy recognizes that kids need activity to avoid obesity, build healthy lifestyles and to develop social skills on the playground.
