Propane tank bomb found near Centralia power plant

The State Patrol is helping the Lewis County sheriff's office investigate a bomb found near the TransAlta power plant at Centralia.

CENTRALIA — The State Patrol is helping the Lewis County sheriff's office investigate a bomb found near the TransAlta power plant at Centralia.

The sheriff's office says it's a 5-gallon propane tank with a small amount of black powder and a blasting cap.

Sheriff Steve Mansfield says it had exploded it could have caused a major coal fire.

The tank was discovered Wednesday next to the railroad tracks used to deliver coal to the plant. A worker put the tank in the back of his truck and showed it to a supervisor who called 911.

TransAlta is the only coal-burning power plant in Washington. A nearby coal mine was shut down in 2006 and coal is delivered on the rail spur.
