Sound Transit on track for light rail to airport by end of 2009

The federal government says Sound Transit has fixed a scheduling problem and remains on track to open its airport light-rail station as promised by Dec. 29, 2009.

The federal government says Sound Transit has fixed a scheduling problem and remains on track to open its airport light-rail station as promised by Dec. 29, 2009.

A project oversight report in June had estimated completion "will be delayed until the second quarter of 2010" because contractors had not filed a detailed schedule to install station roofs, walls, escalators and rails. Sound Transit has since received a schedule — to finish two months before opening day, leaving little margin for error.

A Federal Transit Administration spokesman said Wednesday a late 2009 opening remains feasible, though "unforeseen challenges could cause delays" on projects.

Next July, trains are scheduled to reach the high-rise Tukwila station. Shuttle buses will take riders 1-½ miles to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, until the airport station is open.
