First person with West Nile virus reported in Washington

The state Health Department says a King County woman in her 50s is apparently the first person in Washington this year with West Nile virus.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The state Health Department says a King County woman in her 50s is apparently the first person in Washington this year with West Nile virus.

It was detected when she was being screened as a blood donor. She did not develop a fever.

Health officials aren't sure where she picked up the disease since she traveled recently in Oregon and Yakima County.

The disease is usually spread through mosquito bites. Health department monitoring this year detected West Nile virus in 14 mosquito samples and six horses, all in Eastern Washington.
