Heavy rain predicted — residents asked to clear street drains

Seattle Public Utilities is asking residents to clear debris from street drains in anticipation of heavy rainfall this afternoon and tonight.

Seattle Public Utilities is asking residents to clear debris from street drains in anticipation of heavy rainfall this afternoon and tonight.

Nearly an inch of rain is expected to fall in about 12 hours starting at 5 p.m., and the city fears clogged street drains — there are about 80,000 throughout the city — could cause flooding. City officials suggest using a rake to move leaves and other debris from the drains into residents' green waste containers.

Drainage crews will be on emergency standby during the storm period. Residents can report a flooding problem by calling 206-386-1800.
