North Bend

A man drowned Saturday while swimming in the Snoqualmie River near North Bend, The Associated Press reported.

Eastside Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Josie Williams said the man, believed to be 19 or 20, disappeared shortly before 6 p.m.

Rescuers found his body in about 15 feet of water at a popular swimming spot east of North Bend. His identity was not immediately available.

Fired prosecutor awarded $3 million

A King County Superior Court jury on Friday awarded more than $3 million to a former senior deputy prosecutor in Pierce County who said she was wrongfully terminated in January 2004.

Barbara Corey, a 20-year veteran of the prosecutor's office, had claimed that Pierce County Prosecutor Gerry Horne targeted her after he heard she might run against him for prosecutor.

Corey's attorney, John Connelly, said Horne manufactured a criminal investigation against Corey and leaked information to the news media to make it appear Corey had been fired for mishandling office funds.

In her lawsuit, Corey said her firing damaged her reputation, caused long-term physical injury and "extreme mental anguish," and limited her ability to pursue meaningful career alternatives.

The jury in the four-week trial awarded $1.5 million for the damage to Corey's reputation, $750,000 for noneconomic damages, $700,000 for damages related to the defamation and $125,000 for lost wages.

Pierce County is expected to appeal the award.

Man held in attack on pregnant woman

Seattle police say a man is in custody after throwing a pregnant woman down a flight of cement stairs and stabbing her in the stomach early Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of North 49th Street.

The victim, who is six months pregnant, was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Police said they do not know the condition of the fetus.

The attacker fled the scene, but Seattle police later arrested a male suspect in the 4600 block of Stone Way North. He was booked into the King County Jail.

Fill-in ferry still serving San Juans

The 144-car ferry Elwha remains out of service because of problems with its propulsion-control system.

The 90-car Sealth will fill in on the Anacortes-San Juan Islands route while repairs are made.

The Elwha was removed from service Aug. 6 because of a problem with its propulsion-control cooling system. It was expected to return to service Friday evening, but it experienced additional problems on its way to Anacortes, the Washington State Department of Transportation said.

The ferry is at the department's Eagle Harbor maintenance facility, where crews are determining necessary repairs, said spokeswoman Hadley Greene. She said she did not have an estimate on how long the ferry will be out of service.

Memorial Monday for ex-Patrol chief

A public memorial is scheduled Monday for Will Bachofner, retired chief of the Washington State Patrol, who died Tuesday.

The service begins at noon at Marcus Pavilion on the St. Martin's University campus in Lacey.

Bachofner, 92, is credited with opening the state-trooper ranks to women and minorities and was the agency's longest-serving chief.
