A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday evening outside a Federal Way middle school following a Junior Football League practice.
The shots were fired about 8:20 p.m. from a black SUV, which fled the scene with several men inside, said Cathy Schrock of the Federal Way Police Department.
"We do not believe this was a random shooting. We believe the victim and the suspects knew one another," Schrock said.
The practice was taking place outside Lakota Middle School on Southwest 314th Street, but the team is not sponsored by the school. Schrock said indications are the victim may have arrived to pick up someone after the practice.
Police were interviewing about 20 witnesses at the school.
Late Thursday, a posting on the Web site of the Federal Way Hawks said grief counselors would be available Friday to assist players and their parents.
