Newborn orca spotted in the San Juans

A baby orca, the L pod's newest member, has been discovered in the San Juan Islands.

Seattle Times staff reporter

Whale researchers discovered a new baby orca Tuesday afternoon in the San Juan Islands.

The calf was only hours old when spotted by staff of the Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbor, who designated the newborn L111.

It is the sixth calf from its 34-year-old mother, L47. She gave birth to her last calf in the summer of 2005, but it died after a few months, according to a news release from the center.

In 2007, there were 43 whales in the L pod. The center hasn't been able to determine a population number this year, but it will include the new calf if it returns to the San Juans next summer.
