5 Ground Zero activists arrested at Bangor WA

Five peace activists have been arrested at a nuclear weapons protest staged outside Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The five were accused of failing to obey a law enforcement officer after they tried to display a banner from an overpass.

BANGOR, Wash. —

Five peace activists have been arrested at a nuclear weapons protest staged outside Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. The five were accused of failing to obey a law enforcement officer after they tried to display a banner from an overpass.

Kitsap County sheriff's officers say they had blocked off that overpass to protect those underneath.

About 30 protesters gathered Monday as part of the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action's annual remembrance of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Kitsap County sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson says most of the protesters - and eventually their banner - spent about an hour within a designated protest area along State Highway 308.

The five were taken to the Kitsap County Jail at Port Orchard, where they were cited and released.
