Elwha ferry out of service until later this week

The Elwha ferry is temporarily out of service due to mechanical problems.

The ferry Elwha will be out of service until later this week after it developed mechanical problems this morning with more than 200 people aboard. Ferry officials canceled several sailings until the 90-car ferry Sealth was moved from the Eagle Harbor maintenance facility on Bainbridge Island to replace the 144-car Elwha while repairs are made

Customers should expect to experience overloads for the next few days because of the smaller replacement boat and should plan to arrive at the terminal earlier than usual.

According to the Coast Guard, the Elwha was drifting in deep water early Wednesday after it became disabled about a half-mile from Blakely Island. Washington State Ferries said the Elwha temporarily lost steering due to a problem with the its cooling system, but the boat was able to make it to Anacortes under its own power.
