Seattle City Councilmember Richard McIver has suffered a setback from recent colon surgery and was in intensive care Tuesday.

Paul Elliott, his chief of staff, said McIver, 67, underwent surgery July 21 to remove part of his colon after "precancerous cells" were discovered.

Elliott said, "he's had a bit of a setback" and went back to the hospital Monday.

"We expect he'll be released from the hospital in a day or two and expect him to be back in the office in very short order," Elliott said.

McIver has been absent from work since the surgery but stopped in at his City Hall office briefly Friday.

The council member had a heart attack in 1998 and underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 2000.

He has served on the council since 1997.
