The Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle is preparing to release more than two dozen western pond turtles back into the wild.
The Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle is preparing to release more than two dozen western pond turtles back into the wild.
The zoo and the state Fish and Wildlife Department are weighing and putting identification marks on the turtles Monday for their release Thursday at ponds in Pierce and Mason counties and the Columbia River Gorge.
The turtles are 10 months old and weigh about 2 ounces each. They were collected as hatchlings and given a head start at the zoo to improve their chances of survival.
The federal Fish and Wildlife Service and Oregon Zoo in Portland also are involved in the project to save the pond turtles.
