Crash of small plane sparks fire in remote area of Mason County

Mason County Sheriff's authorities have responded to a report of a small plane crash about 10 to 12 miles west of Shelton, in the rural Lake Nahwatzel area.

SHELTON, Mason County — The Mason County sheriff's office has confirmed that a small float plane crashed into a heavily wooded area after taking off from a lake west of Shelton. Firefighters are battling a small wildfire at the site.

Several witnesses have reported that the plane's engine cut out shortly after takeoff today. They say the plane banked left and disappeared.

One witness has reported seeing two men on the plane before it took off.

There was no immediate word on the condition of those aboard the plane.
