State strives to register Guard soldiers to vote

To ensure that Washington National Guard soldiers leaving for Iraq are registered to vote this year, workers with the Secretary of State's Office are spending three weeks at the Yakima Training Center.

To ensure that Washington National Guard soldiers leaving for Iraq are registered to vote this year, workers with the Secretary of State's Office are spending three weeks at the Yakima Training Center.

The center is home to the state's largest National Guard unit, the 81st Heavy Brigade Combat Team. The state hopes to make sure the 2,400 soldiers based there are registered.

"We want to make sure that the 81st Brigade members are able to exercise one of our country's most sacred rights," said Secretary of State Sam Reed.

The soldiers are scheduled to leave in October.
