Levee work aimed at flood prevention in Green River valley

Federal and local officials gathered along the banks of the Green River in Kent today to show work being done on a levee to prepare for possible flooding this coming winter.

Federal and local officials gathered along the banks of the Green River in Kent today to show work being done on a levee to prepare for possible flooding this coming winter.

The work is among 55 projects worth some $15 million aimed at flood prevention in King County this year.

The Green River project's goal is to avoid flood damage similar to that along the Mississippi River earlier this year.

King County Councilwoman Julia Patterson, who was at this morning's briefing, said the Green River valley is home to the largest warehouse district in the state and that major roadways and rail lines run through it.

"These corridors are the economic lifeline of the state of Washington," Patterson said.
