Pipe break causes hotel sewage leak in Seattle
Raw sewage has been flowing from a luxury hotel in Seattle into Elliott Bay since Friday.
Raw sewage has been flowing from a luxury hotel in Seattle into Elliott Bay since Friday.
Edgewater Hotel manager Rudy Sharp says temporary repairs to an 8-inch pipe line won't be completed before late Tuesday evening, and a permanent fix is about a week away.
The 223-room hotel at Pier 67 is the only one in the city to be built directly over the bay.
Sharp says the hotel's sewage line ruptured after mounting brackets broke, probably because of corrosion from the salt water.
A city utilities spokesman, Andrew D. Ryan, says the biggest environmental threat from the leak is detergent from the hotel laundry. The laundry does not operate on weekends, and Sharp says it was shut down early Monday.
