Neighbors of the woman, who lives in the 12400 block of 84th Avenue South, saw smoke coming from her home just before noon Saturday, said Dave Nelson, spokesman for King County Fire District 20.
One neighbor went inside to help the woman get out of the house while another called 911, Nelson said. Several other neighbors grabbed garden hoses to try to knock back the fire.
When firefighters arrived, they were able to keep the fire contained. The basement sustained heavy fire damage; the upstairs had minor smoke damage . The woman was uninjured, and both of her dogs escaped unharmed.
Investigators determined that the fire began accidentally, Nelson said. Damage was estimated at $100,000. The Red Cross is assisting the woman and her dogs.

Steel Electric ferries to be put on eBay
The state plans to put its Steel Electric ferries for sale on eBay on July 16 after it received no local bids on the boats.
The state's General Administration Office is trying to sell the four ferries, idled when they were taken out of service in November. They were offered to state agencies, counties, cities, government organizations and nonprofits. The minimum bid is $350,000 for the Illahee, Nisqually, Klickitat and Quinault.
Hadley Greene, a ferries spokeswoman, said there have already been two expressions of interest: the city of Port Townsend, which wants one of the boats as a meeting hall, parking garage or retail space; and the Washington Scuba Alliance, which wants to sink the boats as a dive attraction.

Boy, 17, stung by scorpion in motel
A 17-year-old boy staying at a Tumwater motel was stung by a scorpion and had to be treated at a hospital.
Wendy Holman says she was told her son, Kyle, was the first patient to be treated for a scorpion sting at Olympia's Providence St. Peter Hospital in 37 years.
Motel officials theorize a truck driver from another state must have left the quarter-size scorpion in the room.
The mother says her son felt something funny on his leg, and it went numb.
Kyle Holman was medicated and monitored for about six hours at the hospital.
Wendy Holman says the motel company is allowing the family to stay there for free and has agreed to pay for the teenager's medical bills.
