Founded: On Jan. 3, 1900, railroad magnate James J. Hill sells 900,000 acres of Washington state timberlands to Friedrich Weyerhäuser for $5.4 million. Weyerhäuser forms the Weyerhäuser Timber Co. with 15 partners in Tacoma.
Headquarters: Federal Way.
Employees: 37,900 in 13 countries.
Lines of business: Grows and harvests trees; builds homes; and manufactures, distributes and sells forest products.
Owns or manages: Nearly 22 million acres worldwide, including 6.4 million in the U.S.; owns or manages 2.4 million acres in British Columbia out of a total 15.1 million in Canada.
Northwest holdings: 1.1 million acres in Washington and 1.1 million acres in Oregon. It owns much of the land in the headwater drainages of the Chehalis River in Southwest Washington, where old growth logged off decades ago has been replanted with fast-growing trees that can be harvested about every 40 years.
