Teen girl found guilty in friend's drug-related death

EVERETT — An 18-year-old Puyallup woman has been found guilty of providing drugs to a younger friend who later died of an overdose.
Donalydia Huertas had been accused of giving 16-year-old Danielle McCarthy the drug Ecstasy during a night of New Year's partying in 2007 and refusing to seek medical attention after McCarthy became ill.
The younger girl — also from Puyallup — eventually was taken to Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, where she was pronounced dead on Jan. 1, 2007.
Today, Huertas was found guilty in Snohomish County Superior Court of controlled substance homicide and second-degree manslaughter.
Jurors acquitted her on a charge of first-degree manslaughter. Conviction on the lesser charge leaves open the possibility that Huertas might be sentenced in juvenile court, and serve weeks instead of years in prison.
