Parkland business puts 'fun' in funerals

PARKLAND, Wash. —

Grand Departures Funeral Services in Parkland puts the fun in funerals.

It offers themed caskets, such as one decorated with Air Force planes. The business also creates celebrations for the departed. Themes include a beach luau, square dancing or a motorcycle hearse.

Grand Departures contracts with a Kent business for mortuary services so it can focus on party planning.

The owners are Mary LaFleur, who also owns an insurance agency, and Bob Johnston, a licensed funeral director.

They expect a growing demand for nontraditional funerals.
