Ruby Chow, a giant in King County politics and matriarch of Seattle's Chinese-American community, died this morning in her Seward Park home, her family by her side.
"She broke through glass ceilings before anyone knew about glass ceilings," said her daughter, Cheryl Chow.
Mrs. Chow, who would have turned 88 on Friday, had congestive heart failure and suffered a major stroke four years ago.
She served on the Metropolitan King County Council and was the first woman ever elected president of the Chong Wa Benevolent Association, an international organization that advocates for Chinese immigrants.
She and her husband of almost 70 years, Ping, worked as a team at Ruby Chow's, a restaurant on Broadway that helped cement her place in Seattle as an identifiable figure.
She is survived by her husband, five children, two brothers, one sister, six grandsons, three granddaughters and three great grandsons.
