Suspect in Folklife Festival shooting held on $350,000 bail

The Snohomish man who allegedly opened fire this weekend during Seattle's annual Folklife Festival wounding three people, is facing assault charges.

Bail was set at $350,000 Monday for a 22-year-old Snohomish man who was arrested after a gunshot wounded three people at the annual Northwest Folklife Festival at Seattle Center.

Clinton Chad Grainger was arrested for investigation of three counts of assault after the shooting about 6:20 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say a gun he was carrying in an ankle holster discharged during a scuffle he was having with another man.

The bullet grazed the other man's nasal passage, and then struck another man in the hand and a woman in the leg. None suffered life-threatening injuries. The woman and second man who were struck were not involved in the argument.

Prosecutors called Grainger a danger to the community, and said he is under medical care because he has schizophrenia and is in a methadone program.

King County deputy prosecutor Jamila Taylor asked that bail be set at $500,000, but the judge settled on the lower amount after Grainger's father said he would not be a flight risk.

Police increased their patrols around the festival after the shooting, including having officers on horseback.

Festival executive director Rob Townsend says it's the first serious violence in the 37-year history of the event.
