Floods theaten Okanogan County homes

WINTHROP, Wash. —

Five houses on north-central Washington's Methow River are surrounded by floodwaters this morning, though water isn't touching all of their foundations yet.

The emergency manager of the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office, Scott Miller, says one family waded through the water Sunday to leave their home near Winthrop. Three more unoccupied houses there are surrounded, as well as a fifth near Mazama.

But Miller says the concern is shifting from the Methow to the Similkameen River near Oroville and the Okanogan River near Tonasket. Those rivers are expected to crest above flood stages Wednesday and Thursday.

Soaring temperatures have been rapidly melting mountain snowpack, raising flooding concerns across Eastern Washington.
