Near-record temperatures forecast for Washington
A sudden shot of sunshine promises Washington residents the warmest weekend of the year so far and has started melting the mountain snowpack.
The National Weather Service forecast near-record temperatures today in Western Washington with highs upper 80s through Saturday.
Forecasters are calling for highs in the 80s and 90s in Eastern Washington through the weekend.
The snowmelt is filling rivers. The Weather Service is warning of flooding on the Naches River in the Yakima Valley. Also the St. Joe River in northern Idaho.
Forecasters are also watching for flooding on many other rivers and streams in Eastern Washington.
The rapid melt has created an avalanche danger in the mountains. The North Cascades Highway was closed Thursday by a slide.
