Tacoma chase ends with car in water, passenger dead

A Tacoma man is accused of driving a stolen car into the water at a marina, killing his passenger.

Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, a Tacoma police officer ran the license plate of a car and determined it had been stolen, said Officer Mark Fulghum. Police pulled the car over, he said, but the driver sped away.

Officers began a chase but called it off because it was too dangerous, though they continued following the car until the street dead-ended at a marina. An officer watched the car as it was sinking and saw the driver climb onto the dock.

A police dive team pulled the other man, whose name has not been released, from the water. He died at the scene.

The driver was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault, possession of stolen property and eluding police.
