Man fleeing after one crash dies in another near Purdy
Pierce County sheriff's deputies say an elderly man fleeing from one crash has died in another near Purdy.
Deputy Ed Troyer says 81-year-old Donald Earl Auburn of Vaughn is believed to have hit a school bus Wednesday at the Purdy exit off State Route 16. No children were on the bus and no injuries were reported.
Witnesses say the man's 1993 Honda Accord kept going, reaching speeds of 60 to 70 miles an hour. Then slid sideways on State Route 302, the Key Peninsula Highway, and crossed into oncoming traffic.
Troyer says the car collided shortly before 5 p.m. with a Kia Spectra driven by a 56-year-old Gig Harbor man. Auburn died at the scene and the Gig Harbor man has been hospitalized with serious injuries.
