Yakima bishop, criticized by abuse survivors, to skip papal visit
The Roman Catholic bishop of Yakima has agreed not to attend the pope's U.S. visit this week.
Leaders of Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests asked Sevilla on Thursday to forgo attendance at the visit of Pope Benedict SVI as penance.
In a news release Sunday, Bishop Carlos Sevilla said the group had nothing to do with his decision to forgo the pope's visit to Washington, D.C., and New York this week.
Sevilla also acknowledged that he could have given more information about the case of Rev. Juan Estrada, a former pastor in Wapato, Moxee, Yakima and Ellensburg. However, the bishop says he never did anything to hide the fact that Estrada pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a teenage girl in Oregon.
