WA asking for new bids on Port Townsend-Keystone ferry

The Washington state ferry system has officially rejected the $26 million bid from Todd Shipyards in Seattle to build a 50-car ferry.

The Transportation Department estimates the ferry should cost about $17 million.

The ferry system says it will talk with shipyards about ways to reduce the cost, and invite new bids with the hope of awarding a contract by mid-May.

Todd was the only bidder on the project. The ferry system needs the small ferry for the Port Townsend-Keystone run.

Meanwhile, Republican state Sen. Cheryl Pflug (FLOOG), R-Maple Valley, says there should be a special legislative session to address the ferry system. But there's no realistic chance that will happen.
